New streaming TV shows and movies on Netflix, Hulu, Prime Video, Apple TV+, Disney and more

Another weekend, another batch of new TV shows and movies to watch on all your favorite streaming apps. We’ve got several new seasons of older shows, movies finally making their way from theaters to broadcast, and more.

It’s another rainy weekend here in the mountains, so I plan to get back on the couch and watch at least a few of them over the next couple of days.

Noticeably absent from this list is HBO House of the Dragon, which ended its second season last Sunday with a controversial season finale that angered quite a few fans. Hopefully future seasons will be better.

Okay, let’s dive right in!

The Umbrella Academy Season 4 (Netflix)

I’ve seen two or three episodes of the first season Umbrella Academy and it just didn’t pique my interest. Or, rather, it was certainly interesting, but I just couldn’t get into it for whatever reason. Maybe the characters or just something outside of the writing. I saw the potential but couldn’t muster the interest to continue. But it must have found a pretty passionate audience because it made it to a fourth (and final) season, avoiding the cancellation that hit so many Netflix shows after their first foray.

Tales Of The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (Paramount+)

This is very retro-animated TMNT the show looks like fun. And both critics and audiences are giving it a perfect score on Rotten Tomatoes. You don’t see that very often! This one seems to be aimed at a younger audience, and rightly so. The synopsis reads, “The Turtles, as teenagers, deal with their new lives as heroes while also dealing with the pressures of going to high school in New York City.”

Bikerriders (Peacock)

I’ve been waiting for this one to go live without a premium and today is the day. The Austin Butler / Jodie Comer / Tom Hardy period crime drama about the Vandals biker gang is on my list for today’s movie after missing it at the cinema. It looks great and scored pretty well (80%/75%) with critics and audiences, though definitely not as high as TMNT!

Boosters (Apple TV+)

This trailer makes Matt Damon and Casey Affleck’s new heist movie look really fun, and it probably is, but Doug Liman’s new crime drama is doing pretty poorly with both critics and audiences on Rotten Tomatoes, which which is a shame. It can still be good mindless fun, especially if you like Boston accents. (We recently reviewed Good Will Hunting and man, what a great movie).

Mr. Throwback (Peacock)

I’m not into sports, but I have to hand it to Steph Curry, this looks like a pretty funny “mockumentary” style comedy. Adam Pally plays a burnt-out loser who was once a friend and teammate of Curry’s and has been searching for him while down on his luck. Curry decides to have his documentary crew shift the focus away from him and onto his old friend, and hilarity ensues. We hope so. It looks quite charming.

The Industry Season 3 (HBO/Max)

Somehow I’ve never even heard of it iNdUSTRy until this past week. British drama HBO takes over House of the Dragon on HBO and Max’s Sunday night slot. Kit Harington (aka Jon Snow) is in the cast. The show focuses on graduates competing for a limited number of jobs at London investment bank Pierpoint. It looks pretty cool, and since it’s season 3, if you haven’t seen this yet, you’ll have a few seasons of content to wade through in the meantime.

Despicable Me 4 (VOD)

I kind of miss it Despicable me movies, though I’ll be honest: I’m not sure I’ve seen the third one. The popularity of Minions has kind of taken over the franchise, and now that my kids are teenagers, we just don’t watch movies like this as much anymore (although we all loved Inside Outside 2). Watch on Prime Video

Borderlands (In theaters)

I was excited when I first found out we were getting one Border countries film. The video game franchise it’s based on is perfect for this kind of movie, and the cast — though overall a little older than I’d choose for this kind of movie — looked solid. But then the trailer dropped and it looked really bad, and now the reviews confirm this suspicion, although the audience seems to like it much more than the critics. I’m debating going to the theaters, though I haven’t seen it yet Twisters and it looks like a much better movie overall.

The series continues

Several ongoing series are airing weekly, though I’m not currently covering any with weekly recaps (this will change soon, with Rings of Power returning). Of all these, the first is the series I am interested in starting. I also watched old episodes of the Scottish mystery series Shetland recently, which is a kind of comfort-0

The Snake Queen (Starz) starring Samantha Morton as Catherine De Medici in this historical drama filled with intrigue and politics during 16th century France. One of the top rated shows in this guide with a 100% critical and 92% audience rating.

Lady on the Lake (Prime Video) starring Natalie Portman is a mystery centered around two women and the disappearance of a young girl in Baltimore in the late 60s. 76% critics and 75% audience scores on Rotten Tomatoes.

Sunny (Apple TV+) starring Rashida Jones, it’s about a woman whose husband and son disappear. She is left with her robot husband, Sunny, as she tries to unravel the mystery of her missing family in Kyoto, Japan.

Troppo (Prime Video) is an Australian mystery series based on the book ‘Crimson Lake’ by Candice Fox. It follows an eccentric PI and the disgraced ex-cop she recruits to help solve the mysterious disappearance of a Korean tech pioneer.

Bonus: LA Confidential

Movie night this week was LA Confidential which I don’t think I’ve seen in at least a decade, if not longer. What a great police drama! What a great cast! Russell Crowe, Guy Pearce, Kevin Spacey, James Cromwell, Kim Basinger, Danny DeVito. This is one of my favorite police conspiracy mysteries of all time, and it still holds up after all these years. You can watch it on Prime Video.
